Here at WordNerdPod, we play with words and ideas. So if you like to read and write and create – or even if you don’t (especially if you don’t!) – you’ve come to the right place.

What Is WordNerdPod?

WordNerdPod offers in-person, small group language arts enrichment for middle schoolers and covers three content areas: Creative Writing; Story; and Media Literacy.

The goals are simple:

To have safe, supervised, and supportive face-to-face interactions

To develop critical thinking and communication skills

To encourage creativity and expression while practicing key competencies

To explore words and ideas because words are for everyone

Who Is WordNerdPod For?

Short answer: middle schoolers.

Long answer: middle schoolers who love to read and write and want to get better. Middle schoolers who are reluctant readers and/or writers and could benefit from a new approach. Middle schoolers who need to have fun while growing in these areas. Middle schoolers who miss face-to-face interactions. Middle schoolers who are overwhelmed by large groups. Middle schoolers who need less screen time. Middle schoolers who like to be outside. Middle schoolers who like snacks and conversation. Middle schoolers who need to practice their social skills in low-pressure environment.

How Does WordNerdPod Work?

Pods meet weekly at preset times and locations. Each session lasts for sixty minutes and includes guided conversation, concept/skill practice, and reflection opportunities. Additional details and costs are available on the About page.

Pods will follow masking and social distancing requirements as outlined by the state and local health departments.

Who Leads the Pods?

Tiffany Swanson is a licensed, vaccinated, and motivated educator. She has over six years experience with Fairfax County Schools and holds a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (Literature and Society) from Georgetown University and Bachelors of Arts in International Studies and Spanish from Bradley University.

When Does WordNerdPod Start?

Sessions will be offered beginning May 3, 2021.

How Much Does WorNerdPod Cost?

Cost varies by pod and includes materials and snacks.
